There has been a fundamental shift in corporate leadership paradigms
in the wake of September 11th in the United States. Corporate executives
and managers were ill equipped to assist traumatized employees.
A secondary event of the downturn in the economy impacted employees
leading to fear of layoffs while unrelated events such as investigations
into accounting methods of major corporations all produced a state
of high anxiety or trauma. A new director or a new system introduced
can all lead to trauma resulting in tragedy.
We see repeatedly from the ACT Institutes training results that
symptoms can appear months or years later and hence the name Post
Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD.
A large corporation in Mexico
was recently acquired by a foreign national radically changing the
corporate culture. As a result people were traumatized to the degree
that several committed suicide from the post traumatic stress disorder
they suffered. They didn't know how to cope and no one in the organization
had skills to manage the transition or the effects of the resulting
trauma.
Change management incorporating
the skills of trained corporate leaders and human resources professionals
are a cornerstone to a successful transition.
