“Our experience base at the Global Institute for Trauma Resolution proved that self perpetuating solutions for the treatment of various individuals, communities, corporations and public service agencies suffering the effects of trauma is best provided by the people within these groups. We established ACT Institute as the training division to enable these people to provide effective treatment.”

Dr Stephen Paul Adler Ph.D - Founder and Executive Director

* Interview with Dr. Adler, on working with and healing psychological trauma, Guatemalan TV (4 parts)

DEFINITION OF TRAUMA

On a physical level, trauma has two meanings. The first meaning refers to some part or organ of the body has been suddenly damaged by a force so great that the body's natural protections were unable to prevent injury. The second meaning refers to injuries in which the body's natural healing abilities are inadequate to mend the wound without medical assistance.

On a psychological level or mental level, trauma refers to the wounding of your emotions, your spirit, you will to live, your beliefs about yourself and the world, your dignity, and your sense of security. The assault on your psyche is so great that your normal ways of thinking and feeling and the usual ways you handled stress in the past are now inadequate.

Traumas that involve natural catastrophes such as earth quakes, Hurricanes, Tornadoes or serious accidents, etc. often bring the victim in touch with their own death or deaths of others. At the same time, you feel, or are helpless to prevent death or injury.

Aphrodite Matsakis, Ph.D.

The postraumatic syndrome is the result of a failure of time to heal all wounds.

Bessel A. van der Kolk, M.D.

Big T traumas include violent attacks, rape, war, and so on. A little t trauma is any event that is beyond a person's ability to master at the time of the event. It can be anything we think back on that still has a negative charge. It can be something as simple as a child getting lost for a few minutes, or a child being overwhelmed with fear after a nightmare and nobody comforting them or the wounding of a child's dignity.

Perhaps the biggest misunderstanding about trauma is the emphasis on the direct damage or injury caused by traumatic events. The more important impact on life is caused by trauma's ability to disconnect a person from his or her resourceful states of being (the same principle applies for families, nations and the planet as a whole.)

Robert Schwarz, Psy.D.
