MEDIA ROLE IN SECONDARY TRAUMATIZATION

In New York City, shortly after the attack on September 11th, police were on the river with diesel motors running all night, media helicopters hovered 24/7 in the air photographing the World Trade Center site day after day, military jets flew overhead producing so many of the factors that were recorded in the original traumatization of the attack, that the community, including the media, without realizing it was constantly re-traumatizing that population. In being overzealous and over-covering to the point of overkill, residents of that particular area of the city were in an extended state of trauma beyond the original event resulting in secondary traumatization

The US is in a hyper vigilant hyperactive anxiety state that is traumatizing the whole country. The news media and the present way of reporting trauma does not take into account any of the data that indicates how to modify it and modify it so it can be reported without traumatization. The visual impact of the world trade center attack shown repeatedly even after a year has traumatized people who never saw it and re-traumatized those people who lived through it because the news media is in not taking into account what is known about trauma and what not to do.

ACT has the capabilities to assist governments at local and national levels that support less and less traumatization of the general population while safeguarding the nation.
